Doh! Department
Yeah, OK, sometimes we make dummy mistakes that even Homer wouldn't do. If you received a copy of the newsletter in the post, there was a booking form with it with the WRONG dates on it (Der_ but only by one day, guys - Dat's accurate in my book! - Homer).
The RIGHT dates are 18th-20th July, as it says in the newsletter itself. You can still use the booking form, 'cos now we all know the proper dates don't we?
Now we're going away to write out 100 times: We must get a volunteer proof reader!
14th May 2008
Just confirmed that the Doonan Family and FOS Brothers will both be headlining at our special 40th gig. Exact times and running order will be here on our website just as soon as we have it. More details soon.
The 39 year questions - or - a few words on telegraph poles
Several people have said, "Hang about, if the festival started in 1969 how come this is the 40th Anniversary, when it's only 2008?" Surely that's only 39 years ago? (Thanks, Joe and others). Well they're absolutely right. So which is true 40th Anniversary or 39 years? Like one of those weird pub quiz questions, the right answer is both!
This is an old problem - so old in fact that the easiest way to explain it is to use telegraph poles! With 40 poles there are only 39 spaces between them* So festival number 1 was in 1969 and 39 years later we arrive at festival number 40.
Just to digress, the confusion probably arises over birthdays. We're zero when we're born and only count as one at the end of our first year. So forty years later we're forty. The festival is one straightaway. This mathematical anomaly also led to the controversy over the true date of the millennium, and whether it should correctly be regarded to occur at the start of 2000 or at its end, because... zzzzzzzzz... oops, sorry, must have dozed off there.
ANYWAY, it's 40 up! And a more perfect excuse for a bloody good festival we've yet to hear.
If you want to prove this for yourself just set up 40 telegraph poles in the beer garden of your local pub and count the spaces. If it's a small pub, matches will do just as well, and then you won't miss the rest of the pub quiz questions.
